Bed linen that was no longer used in our hotels was transformed into fashion art

On Tuesday, 10 March, an exhibition will open in the atrium of Viru Keskus in Tallinn, the main characters of which are the bed sheets of Tallink hotels and ships. Fashion, textile, and accessory students at the Estonian Academy of Arts transformed the blue-dyed sheets into various experimental forms, including costumes and accessories.
“We aim to offer our guests the most pleasant stay in our hotels and on our ships, and we maintain high quality standards. This applies to everything from services to bed linens,” said Ave Svarts, a member of the Tallink Hotels Management Board. “At some point, however, even the best bedsheet wears out. As a company that values the circular economy, we are pleased that the Estonian Academy of Arts is offering creative ways to reuse this valuable material with the help of students. After this exhibition, every one of us will probably look at bed linens with new eyes!” Svarts added, expressing hope that the collaboration between Tallink and the Estonian Academy of Arts will inspire other companies to find new uses for their discarded materials or production waste.
The students completed the works during a month-long course, transforming simple bed sheets into fantastic creations through weaving, fraying, waxing, and other methods. The themes of the pieces hint at the source material, where different hotel guests and the strangely familiar interior converge. The students were supervised by fashion designer Liisi Eesmaa and artist Flo Kasearu.
