The hotel was completed in 1979, for the pre-Olympics and the first visitors arrived for the Baltic Regatta the same year. The hotel is one part of the Tallinn Olympic yachting center, established for the yachting regatta of the 1980 Olympics, held in Tallinn. This regatta was an event of historical importance – Tallinn and Estonia entered the world’s sports map.
The hotel, which resembles with its construction that of the catamaran, was erected for the Sailing regatta of the Olympic Games 1980, and due to its unique unfinished concrete construction and plenty of design elements it remains under the protection of the National Heritage Board as an architectural treasure. Awarded with the special prize on the biennale of the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1983.
Initially, the hotel was known by the name of SPORT and had 276 rooms. In 1992 after the first major renovations, the name was changed to PIRITA. The inside swimming pool and gyms, which had become the favorite places of local people, are mainly known by the name of Pirita TOP, where several top sports events of Tallinn and Estonia have taken place.
The Pirita TOP SPA Hotel was opened in February 2003 after major renovation and reconstruction. The Pirita TOP SPA Hotel is a modern SPA–type hotel, carrying on the healthy and sporty traditions of its predecessors.
